For several years, Good News Clinics has been the recipient of grants from It’s The Journey to allow us to provide screening mammograms for our patients. Their biggest fundraiser, the Georgia 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer, was severely impacted by COVID-19 last year. This year, we want to help raise funds for them. All the money raised stays in Georgia to combat breast cancer and breast disease.
For women in Georgia, the CDC lists cancer as the second leading cause of death (behind heart disease). Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths for women in Georgia (behind only lung cancer). Good News Clinics provides clinical breast exams and mammograms for its female patients according to guidelines from the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists. Good News Clinics receives grant funds from It’s The Journey, which help pay for the costs we incur for the mammograms and radiology fees on behalf of our patients. If further testing or treatment for breast disease or cancer is needed, Good News Clinics schedules that testing/treatment for our patients. The Department of Public Health estimates that there will be 8,770 new cases of breast cancer this year. There will be an estimated 1,410 deaths from breast cancer in Georgia this year. The latest Community Health Needs Assessment generated on behalf of Northeast Georgia Health System indicated that in 2018, there were 116 new cases of breast cancer in our area. They project a 5 year growth in new cases of breast cancer of 10.9% in our area.
Save the Tatas will feature a decorated bra contest. Members of the community can decorate a bra and enter it into the judging. We have transitioned the event to an on-line social media contest due to current COVID numbers in our community. Decorate your bra – any size bra and any color is fine! Choose a theme that reflects you, your organization, or a message about breast health. Then just get creative! Bring your bra with a short explanation about your theme to Good News Clinics. We are asking for a $100 donation per bra all of which will go to It’s The Journey.
